After three days of having no hot water, I was ecstatic to return home today to a dishwasher full of CLEAN dishes and the ability to wash my hands and have them come really clean. In our 2-year-old home, something went awry with the water heater and we have been without that luxury since Saturday evening.
Thank heaven Mom and Dad have three showers in their home and generously let the four of us in at any hour of the day or night to use one. I was watching the dirty clothes hampers fill without much relief in sight, and I was not looking forward to returning home from the doctor visit and shopping and needing to boil water in order to wash all the dirty dishes in the dishwasher.
Joe the Plumber came highly recommended, but after leaving him a message two days in a row without hearing from him, Jeff took matters into different hands and found the name of a repairman who had helped install the generator at my parents' house. He was here within hours and with minor adjustments to the fancy shmancy pilot-less gas water heater, it now functions perfectly again.
I've never been so grateful to empty the dishwasher as I experienced just now putting away clean silverware. And I just wasn't looking forward to 29 people in the house without hot water. Is there anyone out there who can relate to my jubilation?? We have become spoiled indeed, with the conveniences we take for granted.

Totally. We once went 5+ days with a broken dryer (it was over a holiday weekend) and when the repair guy finally came out, he said he didn't have the part. Because I was so patient about it, he drove out to Tukwila to pick it up and he said, "I should've had the part with me and after you were so nice and I saw how much you needed it, I drove out to get it." Of course, it had to happen when my kids were sick and throwing-up all over their bedding.
I was never so happy to do laundry in all my life. The next time it happened (and I had to wait all week for a new dryer), a friend offered to do my laundry for me - even insisted on picking it up. I couldn't believe it when she folded it for me! What would've been a very hard week became one of my easiest. I'll be grateful to her forever.
So glad you have hot water again! During our 5 day power outage, we had no hot water. I thought I had it bad until I met someone from Carnation whose power was out even longer and they had no running water because they were on a well, which required power for the pump. Never thought of that.
We really are spoiled, aren't we? So glad your water heater is working! :)
It's so true; we never seem to fully appreciate our modern conveniences until we have to do without them. With 29 people in the house, that hot water wouldn't seem like a "convenience," but an absolute necessity! Hope you have a great time, and that you will maintain your HEALTH throughout . . . I am quite certain that what you really need is a good REST. Love you!
Oh Gwen - what a nightmare! I've never had to go without hot water before, but have had other conveniences suddenly taken away for a few days at a time: Ability to flush a toilet; running water (period, hot or cold); electricity...the list goes on. And like with our health, we hardly appreciate these things until they are gone or in ill-repair. Thank heavens you were able to get that resolved BEFORE the family reunion. Imagine if that would have happened DURING the reunion! The Lord is merciful, and does seem to have a good sense of timing... :)
